PLASTIC- FREE JULY: DAY 22

𝐂𝐈𝐆𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐄 𝐁𝐔𝐓𝐓𝐒⁣

I used to smoke. I was a smoking scuba diver, like many.⁣

It took moving to Korea to teach English to break the habit. You see, it’s not culturally acceptable for women to smoke in Korea. Some of you might find that a sexist idea, but it worked for me at the time. Thank you, Korea!⁣

Did you know that cigarette butts:⁣
– contain plastic?⁣
– contain a cocktail of chemicals and heavy metals?⁣
– pollute land and water?⁣
– inhibit plant growth?⁣
– are some of the most commonly found items during beach cleans?⁣
– are recyclable but not many know/ care enough to do so?⁣

Look how many butts we picked up last year in Villefranche, just before the AIDA World Championship started. It took about an hour to collect around 1,500 butts. This could pollute up to 750,000 litres of water.⁣

That’s a meaningless large number for me…⁣
100,000 liters = 666 baths,1,428 washing machine cycles or 8 years of showers…or 175,000 pints of beer.⁣ YIKES!

𝐀𝐋𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐒:⁣

If you can’t stop smoking for your sake, the sake of others around you, or the environment, consider rolling your own.⁣

E-cigarettes are also wasteful so that’s not a good solution.⁣

If I could stop, so can you. ⁣

Set your WHY and remind yourself.⁣

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭!⁣
